During the third period of last night’s wild contest between the Nashville Predators and Toronto Maple Leafs, J.S. Giguere apparently tweaked his groin and was pulled in favour of Jonas Gustavsson, who went on to make several tremendous saves and seal the victory for the Toronto Maple Leafs. “He came to the bench and said his groin was tight, and he wasn’t comfortable. He wasn’t sure he should try and finish the game, with his past with this,” said Wilson.
After today’s practice, Ron Wilson indicated that J.S. Giguere will miss at least the next two games to heal his groin. However, Jonas Siegel at AM640 is reporting that Giguere will miss 1 to 2 weeks.
This now provides Jonas Gustavsson with the opportunity to pitch his case for the #1 position in net on this team. Gustavsson currently sports a record of 2-3-1-1, with a goals against average of 2.85 and a save percentage of 0.947.
Backing up Gustavsson over the next two games will be James Reimer, recalled from the Toronto Marlies, who currently sports a record of 5-3-1-0, however one has to scratch their head and wonder why Jussi Rynnas isn’t being given the opportunity to come up. Both goaltenders’ statistics are provided below:
Both goaltenders have played the same number of games, with Reimer winning 2 more games than Rynnas. However, Rynnas holds a superior goals against average and save percentage. Perhaps Burke is giving Reimer the opportunity to backup Gustavsson simply because Reimer has been with the Marlies longer than Rynnas and he wants to honour that, or it could be that he’d rather keep Rynnas on the Marlies to keep the Marlies winning going. Either way, it is a bit interesting. What are your thoughts?
